Panicum virgatum (Linnaeus)
Pȟeži blaskáska (Lakȟóta)
This common grass of Great Plains tallgrass prairies once served as a food staple for the great herds of American Bison. It may now have another use value. The Oglala Sioux Tribe (Pine Ridge Reservation) has proposed to use reservation land “for economic growth by testing the potential of switchgrass as a biomass fuel” (United States Department of Agriculture, “Oyate Kici Icaga [Grow For the People]”).
