India Ink on Tyvek, Indigenous Mask and Spanish Comb
45" x 67.5"
The figures in these pieces are inspired in the images taken from TSA machines. Additionally they reference Spanish Colonial caste paintings wherein which people were annotated according to their racial mixture. Mestiza is someone of Spanish and Indian background for example. These TSA images are representative of a contemporary form of screening individuals for placement in a contemporary categorization. The Spanish comb on the mask is a metaphor for cultural hybridity, somehow similar to a catholic church built over an indigenous pyramid, like the marking of territory. The bodies are drawn suspended like the flowers in a Linnean botanical drawing formula.
